ABSTRACT
Insulin-like growth factor 2 receptor (IGF2R) is one the genes responsible for regulating growth in pigs. In this study, IGF2R in Philippine native pigs was characterized for the presence of genetic variants. DNA from thirty Philippine native pig samples were extracted. Exons 37 and 48 of IGF2R were amplified and sequenced. Six SNPs were detected at positions g.70G>C, g.88G>T, g.164A>G of exon 37 and g.10C>T, g.369T>A of exon 48. Gene and genotypic frequencies were computed and compared among the genetic groups of Eastern Samar, Kalinga, Marinduque and Quezon, and between large and small breeds. Fisher’s exact test was performed to determine differences in gene frequencies. The test revealed that four SNPs at positions g.70G>C and g.164A>G in exon 37 (P<0.05) and g.10C>T and g.369T>A (P<0.01) are different among genetic groups while two SNPs at positions g.164A>G of exon 37 (P<0.05) and g.10C>T of exon 48 (P<0.01) are significantly different between size classifications. The present study provides SNP’s that can be used as genetic markers to associate with growth traits of Philippine native pigs and for future imprinting studies.
